A study on the effectiveness of Bridges Third Edition

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Research and Reform in Education conducted an efficacy study to assess the impact of the Bridges Third Edition curriculum on students’ mathematics learning. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study analyzed test scores from more than 10,000 students in 27 schools for Grades K–5 across two districts in California and Arizona.

Bridges and comparison schools were matched on key characteristics such as student demographics and prior achievement. This design allowed researchers to examine the impact of Bridges instruction on student math performance.

The study included:

Across two states:

Student learning measured with:

Key Findings

Bridges students scored higher than comparison students on state mathematics assessments, with results that are statistically significant and educationally meaningful.

Greater overall performance
across states

Bridges students scored 0.10 standard deviations higher than comparison students, reflecting meaningful gains in overall math achievement.

Gains on Nationally
Used Assessment

Bridges students showed an 8-point advantage on Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) mathematics assessment, which is used in multiple states across the United States.

Improvement for Underserved Student Groups

Bridges students from families who are economically disadvantaged scored higher than similar comparison students.

Deeper Conceptual
Understanding

Bridges students outperformed comparison students in several content areas, including Measurement, Data, and Geometry (AASA) and Geometry (iReady assessment).
